Beat the Heat: Summer Health Tips to Keep You Safe
Summer is a time for fun, family, and sunshine—but high temperatures can put your health at risk if you’re not careful. Heat exhaustion, dehydration, and sunburn are common this time of year, but the good news is they can be prevented with a few simple habits.
Stay Hydrated
Water is your best friend in the heat. Aim for at least 8–10 glasses per day, and more if you’re active or outdoors. Skip the sugary sodas and limit caffeine or alcohol, since they can make dehydration worse.
Quick tip: If your urine is pale yellow, you’re likely hydrated. Dark yellow? Time to grab some water.
Protect Your Skin
Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach—it’s a daily necessity in the summer. Choose SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Don’t forget areas like your ears, neck, and tops of your feet.
Know the Signs of Heat Illness
Pay attention to your body.
Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, or muscle cramps
Heat stroke (a medical emergency): confusion, rapid heartbeat, high body temperature, or loss of consciousness
If you suspect heat stroke, call 911 right away.
Dress Smart and Take Breaks
Lightweight, light-colored clothing helps your body stay cool. Take breaks in the shade or indoors when you can, especially during the hottest part of the day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
